Slum Outreach

Slums are the hub for street kids and usually where they seek shelter or live with families.

Project I Am International intentionally targets major slum areas within the city of Hyderabad. Slums are the hub for street kids and usually where they seek shelter or live with families. There are usually trafficking situations that we can identify once we regularly visit a slum and establish relationships with community leaders. It is essential that we earn the trust and confidence of the children, as well as the caregivers, if we intend to make an impact in the community and ultimately, a successful rescue.
Some of the ways we work is by regularly providing monthly food bags. Each bag has rice, lentils, oil, and other provisions. We also sometimes serve hot meals, distribute hygiene products, and have a little fun by playing games and projecting movies. The community loves it and it is also a great way for us to involve local volunteers with our work!
We have had the most success reaching street children and single moms by our outreach projects. Many people have a misconception that these people want to immediately leave the streets as soon as we offer the opportunity, unfortunately, this is not usually the case. It takes time to gain their trust and build a relationship before we can successfully rescue them from the vulnerabilities of the street. The good news is once we have proven we are trustworthy, we are able to rescue many children and mothers at once.
